Trump’s Campaign Faces Legal Cost Controversy

( – According to a Washington Post July 29 report, former President Donald Trump’s political action committee Save America has already spent about $40 million in legal fees. The liberal newspaper pointed out the PAC has spent this money in 2023’s first half to defend the former commander-in-chief and some of his advisers.

Separately, the New York Times reported that the PAC allegedly asked for the return of $60 million it previously donated to another organization. Apparently, this one has been one of Trump’s main supporters for his 2024 Republican Party nomination. Two unnamed individuals familiar with the matter said that the PAC has been forced to take this step because of the massive costs it’s facing to pay Trump’s “legal bills.” The Times said that while it communicated with Trump’s campaign for comments, it received no answer.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Washington Post said that the PAC’s spending on Trump’s legal costs has become a major issue. The newspaper explained this has drawn attention from prosecutors about a possible conflict of interest between the former president and witnesses.

The Post also noted that different sources who refused to be identified revealed that the PAC will disclose nearly $40.2 million in legal spending anytime soon. As reported by CNN, this amount of money is more than double the total amount Save America spent on legal fees in 2022.

According to the Times, a spokesman for Trump’s campaign named Steven Cheung blamed the Department of Justice in a statement for the overall spending on lawyers. He said that the “weaponized” DOJ keeps going against “innocent Americans” because they are working for Trump. Cheung also accused the agency of having no “legitimate case.”

The former president is currently facing dozens of federal charges in the state of Florida because of the illegal retention of classified government documents at his Mar-a-Lago mansion. Trump is also facing state charges in New York after an investigation into hush money he allegedly paid to former porn actress Stormy Daniels.
