(AmericanProsperity.com) – House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pledged that if he became Speaker in 2022, he would oust Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the Foreign Affairs Committee based on her past anti-Semitic comments. Several liberal Jewish groups disagree with the plan and have come together to challenge the Republican representative’s decision.

Members of J Street banded with T’ruah, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, New Israel Fund, Habonim Dror North, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action America, Americans for Peace Now, and Ameinu. Together, they drafted a letter arguing that despite any ideological differences Jews might have with Omar, they believe the representative is still qualified for the position. The groups allege that McCarthy’s planned move is “for purely political purposes” that are “motivated by partisanship, not principle.”
The sentiment contrasts sharply with another letter McCarthy previously received — but this one came from the Coalition for Jewish Values, composed of Rabbis from all across the United States, Israel, and the UK. They feel Omar has shown evidence of bigotry that Congress can’t allow to continue, and they believe it effectively reflects on her ability to serve in the leadership role.
Is Representative Omar a bad fit for the Foreign Affairs Committee, or do J Street et al. have a point?
