UN Officials Hail Pauses in Fighting in Gaza for Polio Vaccines

(AmericanProsperity.com) – United Nation officials have hailed limited pauses in the fighting between Hamas and Israel in order to allow children to get Polio vaccines.

Top UN officials are focusing on peacebuilding and humanitarian efforts at a meeting that was requested by Israel. It was backed by its allies, the United States, France, and Great Britain.

Algeria also requested that a UN meeting take place to discuss the war and the Palestinians. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN undersecretary-general for political and peacebuilding, and Eden Wosornu, director of Operation and Advocacy Division at the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, voiced their optimism about the polio-inspired pauses. They stated that these are “rays of hope” and similar remarks were made by representatives of France, Britain, and the United States.

“It does not have to be this way. Indeed, over the past few days, there have been signs that humanitarian objectives can inspire positive steps,” Wosornu said.

Nicolas de Rivière, the French Ambassador to the U.N. said to the council, “This vaccination campaign demonstrates that it is possible to allow humanitarian actors to act on the ground.” He continued, “That must become the rule.”

According to the UN World Health Organization, over one hundred and eighty thousand children in Gaza have been vaccinated for Polio, but the goal is to vaccinate over six hundred thousand children.

Gaza has reported its first case of Polio in twenty five years which is what prompted the pause in fighting to ensure that children in the area are getting vaccinated. The Polio case in question was a ten month old boy who now is paralyzed in his leg.
