(AmericanProsperity.com) – The US government is planning to prolong the parole of refugees from Ukraine who have been processed along the border with Mexico after escaping from their nation during the first weeks of the Russian invasion in 2022. According to a CBS News Monday report, a government notice obtained by the media outlet shows that the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is making efforts to help 20,000 Ukrainians that were processed at the southern border so they can be inscribed to the “Uniting for Ukraine” initiative, which would extend their stay in the United States for one more year.
Over 100,000 refugees from Eastern European countries have entered the US through the program, which provides the opportunity to stay in the US for 24 months legally. While a similar number of Ukrainians have entered the “Uniting for Ukraine” initiative, fewer than 1,000 have been appropriately processed through the refugee program. The DHS expects to review each of these cases in one month, and those who are approved can download their updated parole.
Talking to media outlet The Hill, DHS spokesperson Angelo Fernandez Hernandez explained that the agency believes there are humanitarian reasons for extending these parole for Ukrainians based on their circumstances, so it can eventually align with the program’s parole. He added that this whole situation is a consequence of “Russia’s unprovoked invasion” and that refugees from Ukraine can try different immigration channels like applying for Temporary Protected Status or political asylum.
Over the last few months, Ukrainians have been forced to leave their country because Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine in a war that has already devasted numerous cities and regions. While the vast majority of Ukrainian refugees are currently in Poland, many have escaped to multiple European countries, the United States, and Canada.
The US government has declared that most Ukrainians want to return home. However, it remains unclear when the war will end.
