Vaccine Companies Speak Up

( – Some Americans express concern about how COVID-19 is affecting the country, pressuring medical companies to fast-track a vaccine before it’s safe. In response, pharmaceutical industry leaders have spoken out in a historic statement that shows their commitment to ethics and safety.

On Tuesday, September 8, nine CEOs of major vaccine-developing companies released a statement, outlining their commitment to “uphold the integrity of the scientific process” through “high ethical standards and sound scientific principles.” The represented companies include:

  • AstraZeneca
  • BioNTech
  • GlaxoSmithKline plc
  • Johnson & Johnson
  • Merck
  • Moderna, Inc.
  • Novavax, Inc.
  • Pfizer Inc.
  • Sanofi

In the pledge, the biopharma leaders vowed only to apply for approval or emergency use authorization after the Phase 3 clinical study of their vaccines are complete. The third phase is designed to ensure the vaccine meets all the requirements of the FDA and other regulating authorities.

Pfizer is expected to have Phase 3 results of their vaccine by the end of October, with distribution coming soon after, if approved. Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer Inc., also individually encouraged the public about his company’s high standards here:

This pledge shows a commitment to safety from the major players racing to develop a coronavirus vaccine. While many desire a COVID-19 inoculation as soon as possible, approval for a safe one is still at least a few months away.
