Virginia Gun Control Bills Head to Governor

Virginia Gun Control Bills Head to Governor

( – A rally of 22,000 pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment activists failed to persuade Virginia Democrats from passing gun control laws in January.

And when Virginia Democrats overwhelmingly won the state House and Senate in 2019, they used their power to pass anti-gun measures such as:

  • Expand background checks
  • Cap handgun purchases
  • Implement a red flag law
  • Allow local government authority to ban weapons in public buildings or at events
  • Increase penalties for a minor’s access to a gun

In addition, seven other laws were passed that will impact a private citizen’s ability to own or use a firearm.

The only proposed legislation not passed was a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. This has been sent to Gov. Northam’s desk for his signature.

In response to the Governor’s gun control agenda, over 100 local governments in Virginia declared themselves as Second Amendment sanctuaries and signaled their intent to defy the new state laws.

It’ll be interesting to see how these opposing views play out from here. But, so far, the citizens of Virginia have been very clear about their choices and the divide between them.
