Virginia Senate Rejects Assault Weapon Ban

( – Four moderate Senate Democrats in Virginia joined state Republicans to block a ban on assault weapons.

The legislation would have prohibited the sale of semiautomatic guns, including AR-15 style rifles. It would have also banned the possession of gun magazines that hold more than 12 rounds of ammunition.

Senators are asking the state crime commission to investigate the issue, and the legislation is not expected to come back around until 2021.

In January, tens of thousands of gun owners rallied at the Virginia state capital to peacefully protest gun control measures by the new Democratic majority in both the Virginia House and Senate.

Lawmakers in both chambers did pass bills that would limit handgun purchases to one a month, universal background checks, allow local governments to ban guns in public places, and a red flag law that would law enforcement to take guns temporarily from those considered to be a danger to themselves or others.
