Walmart Recalls Great Value Apple Juice For Containing Arsenic

(AmericanProsperity.com) – Walmart has recalled almost ten thousand cases of apple juice sold in its U.S. stores after they were found to contain high levels of Arsenic.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration originally announced the recall in the middle of August, but has now given the recall an urgent classification. The recall affected over nine thousand cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in twenty-five states.

The Florida-based manufacturer, Refresco Beverages U.S. Inc, recalled the contaminated six-packs of eight ounce juices after they discovered the levels of the chemical contaminant. A new classification of the recall stated that it could cause temporary health consequences but that it’s not likely to cause serious medical issues.

Molly Blakeman, a Walmart spokesperson, said, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, both inorganic and organic arsenic can be found in food at low concentrations; inorganic arsenic is more toxic to humans than naturally occurring arsenic, and therefore the health effects are more severe.

The levels found in the apple juice were low enough that the FDA is confident very little health consequences will result, but it was enough for the company to recall the apple juice. Testing is routine in most cases and elevated levels can cause symptoms such as muscle cramping, numbness, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

There are currently no reports of illness related to the arsenic tainted apple juice.
