Republicans Move To Block Democrat Plan To Draft Women
(AmericanProsperity.com) – Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed (D) introduced a bill on July 18 that, among other changes, would allow the US military to add women to the draft in the event of a war. S.4543 is an effort to alter The Military Selective Service Act to
“modernize” the draft. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri (R) is joining efforts with fellow Republicans, including Ted Cruz (TX) and Marco Rubio (FL), to bury the Democratic-led measure.
Senator Hawley is leading the GOP effort to strike Democrats’ proposal to include women in the military draft.

In Sec. 521, “Modernization of the Selective Service System,” Reed’s proposed amendment suggests striking all explicit male references and replacing them with gender nonspecific words. For example, he recommended dropping “male” from both “male citizen” and “male person.” The senator also wanted to use “appear” instead of “present himself.” Citing section 703(a) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2002e–2(a)), the Rhode Island Democrat said he believes the country’s defense will benefit if women were to enlist alongside men in potential drafts.
Sen Hawley and eight other Republican leaders introduced the “Don’t Draft Our Daughters” amendment in response to Reed’s plan. Hawley told Fox Digital, “We should celebrate the women who have volunteered to serve our country,” drawing a clear line in the sand between allowing women to fight in the military and forcing them to become active service members during times of war.
