RECALL: Defective Home Gym Equipment – INJURIES REPORTED

Yellow product recall sign against cloudy sky

After being responsible for hundreds of alarming injuries, Bowflex is recalling millions of adjustable dumbbells.

The massive recall comes after the popular fitness company filed for bankruptcy in March.

The move raises questions about whether affected consumers will receive fair compensation for these potentially dangerous products that many Americans purchased for home workouts.

The recall affects about 3.8 million units of Bowflex SelectTech 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells sold across the United States from 2004 through May 2024.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the weight plates can unexpectedly detach from the handles during use, creating a serious impact hazard for users.

Johnson Health Tech Trading and the CPSC announced that the recall is “due to reports that the weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard.”

The recall announcement comes at a time when home fitness equipment has become increasingly popular among Americans who prefer working out in the privacy of their own homes rather than paying for gym memberships.

Many consumers invested in these premium dumbbells, which ranged in price from $200 to $800, believing they were purchasing a high-quality product from a trusted American brand.

Instead, over 100 consumers have reported injuries from the failing equipment.

The CPSC reports these injuries include “such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions,” making this recall a serious safety concern rather than a minor inconvenience.

The agency is urging all owners to immediately stop using these dumbbells to prevent further injuries.

The company’s bankruptcy complicates matters for consumers seeking remedies.

Johnson Health Tech Retail, which acquired some of Bowflex’s assets, is handling the recall response.

However, consumer advocates are criticizing the company’s remedy options as inadequate.

Consumer Reports has called for full refunds for all affected customers, rather than the partial solutions currently being offered.

The remedy options vary depending on where and when the dumbbells were purchased.

Costco customers appear to have the best option as they can return their dumbbells to any Costco warehouse for a full refund.

Other consumers may receive prorated vouchers or digital fitness memberships instead of cash refunds, which many find unsatisfactory.

For Americans who own these dumbbells, the claim process requires submitting information through the company’s website, including contact details, serial numbers, and proof of purchase.

The company will provide prepaid shipping for returning the dumbbell handles and bases, while the weight plates can be disposed of locally.

Affected consumers can also contact customer support via phone for assistance with their claims or with questions about the recall process.
