Tragic Discovery in St. Cloud Home
On February 7, 2026, at approximately 8:20 p.m., a concerned witness conducted a welfare check at the Tobler residence in the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South in St. Cloud after no contact with Hallie since February 3. The witness discovered a horrific scene: Hallie Marie Tobler dead in the bathroom with multiple stab wounds to her chest, upper back, head, and neck.
Dylan Michael Tobler was found in the living room with self-inflicted wounds, bloody knives nearby. Police responded immediately to what would become a homicide investigation that shattered a family and ended a political campaign.
Husband Charged After Hospitalization
Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, was transported to a hospital in stable condition before being taken into custody by St. Cloud Police. After a medical examiner ruled the death a homicide and confirmed the autopsy findings of fatal knife wounds, prosecutors filed second-degree murder charges against Dylan on February 20, 2026.
He admitted to police that he was the only person present and acknowledged fault for the incident. Dylan remains in Stearns County Jail, facing the consequences of this senseless act of violence that destroyed his young wife’s life and devastated her family.
Campaign Suspended Amid Family Grief
Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud city councilor who served from 2010 to 2018, had been running a long-shot bid for Minnesota governor in 2026, finishing eighth in a recent informal GOP straw poll. Following the murder of his daughter, Johnson made the only decision a father could make under such circumstances.
On February 10, 2026, the Minnesota Republican Party announced that Johnson was suspending his campaign to focus on his family during this unimaginable tragedy. His campaign website was taken down as the family withdrew from public life to grieve privately.

GOP Offers Support and Condolences
Minnesota Republican Party Chair Alex Plechash reached out personally to Johnson, expressing the party’s heartbreak and offering prayers for the family during what he described as a profound loss amid “circumstances we’re discovering.” The Minnesota GOP issued statements supporting Johnson’s decision to prioritize his family over political ambitions, a choice that resonates with conservative values of family first.
This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that public servants are human beings facing the same devastations as any American family, and that some losses transcend all political considerations. The case continues to draw attention to the critical issue of domestic violence and the need for community support systems.
