Ashli Babbitt's Mother Arrested on 2nd Anniversary of Jan. 6

( – On January 6, 2021, an unruly crowd stormed the US Capitol shortly after former President Donald Trump gave a speech at the nearby Ellipse. One of the protestors, Ashli Babbitt, 35, tangled with a group of Capitol Police officers at a blocked doorway, and one of them shot and killed her. Authorities arrested the deceased 35-year-old’s mother exactly two years after the events that unfolded on that fateful day.

The Capitol Police Department issued a press release on January 6, 2022, detailing the arrest of Micki Witthoeft, 58. According to the statement, a group of protesters was “illegally blocking traffic” near the Capitol Grounds. The group hadn’t obtained a permit for the gathering. Officers issued an ultimatum to the group — they could get out of the roadway or be placed under arrest.

Authorities claimed the woman, later identified as Witthoeft, repeatedly refused to get out of the road. The statement explains she turned around and put her hands behind her back, indicating a willingness to be arrested. Witthoeft and other demonstrators shouted Babbitt’s name as authorities walked her to the back of a nearby police car in handcuffs.

Witthoeft was at the Capitol to protest on the 2nd anniversary of the January 6 riot and her daughter’s subsequent death. According to the press release, Capitol Police officers charged her with two traffic violations, one for failure to follow an order from Capitol Police and another for blocking or obstructing traffic. The statement noted that authorities handled Witthoeft’s case as they typically do similar ones. Officers arrested, processed, and later released Witthoeft, giving her a time and date to appear in court.

Speculation surrounding Babbitt’s death and the underlying circumstances remain controversial. Many consider her shooting an assassination. Republican House members have promised to launch an exhaustive investigation into the January 6 riot and law enforcement’s response.
