DEMOCRAT CONGRESSWOMAN BUSTED

A House Democrat has been federally charged with stealing $5 million in taxpayer-funded COVID-19 disaster relief and funneling the money into her congressional campaign through an elaborate money laundering scheme.

Story Snapshot

  • Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) charged with stealing $5M in FEMA COVID funds.
  • Money was laundered through family accounts and illegally donated to her 2021 congressional campaign.
  • Attorney General Pam Bondi calls it a “particularly selfish, cynical crime” against taxpayers.
  • Congresswoman faces a maximum 53-year prison sentence if convicted on all charges.

Federal Grand Jury Issues Multi-Count Indictment

The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick faces federal charges for orchestrating a sophisticated scheme to steal COVID-19 disaster relief funds.

The Florida Democrat and her brother Edwin Cherfilus allegedly laundered $5 million through multiple accounts after their family healthcare company received a FEMA overpayment in July 2021.

This represents yet another example of Democrats exploiting taxpayer-funded programs designed to help Americans during the pandemic crisis.

Elaborate Campaign Finance Fraud Scheme Exposed

Cherfilus-McCormick and co-conspirator Nadege Leblanc orchestrated a “straw donor” operation using the stolen FEMA funds to finance her congressional campaign. The scheme involved sending disaster relief money to friends and relatives, who then illegally contributed it back to her 2021 campaign for Congress.

This violation of campaign finance laws demonstrates the lengths some politicians will go to gain power, using taxpayer money meant for pandemic relief to fund their political ambitions.

Tax Fraud Charges Add to Criminal Allegations

The indictment also charges Cherfilus-McCormick and her tax preparer, David Spencer, with conspiracy to file false tax returns. They allegedly claimed personal and political expenses as business deductions while inflating charitable contributions to reduce her tax obligations.

These charges highlight a pattern of financial misconduct that extends beyond the COVID fund theft, showing systematic abuse of both disaster relief programs and the tax system by a sitting member of Congress.

Attorney General Bondi Promises Justice for Taxpayers

Attorney General Pam Bondi strongly condemned the alleged crimes, stating that using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment represents “a particularly selfish, cynical crime.” Bondi emphasized that no one is above the law, especially powerful individuals who rob taxpayers for personal gain.

Her firm stance reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to holding corrupt officials accountable, regardless of their political position or party affiliation.

Severe Penalties Await if Convicted

Cherfilus-McCormick faces a potential maximum sentence of 53 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Her brother Edwin faces up to 35 years, Spencer up to 33 years, and Leblanc up to 10 years.

While actual sentences often fall below maximum penalties, these charges represent serious federal crimes that carry substantial consequences.

The congresswoman, who won a special election in 2022 to fill the late Rep. Alcee Hastings’ seat, has been under House Ethics Committee investigation since May 2024 for additional potential violations involving community project funding.
