Bemotrizinol did not slide in on hype alone; the maker, DSM Nutritional Products, had to submit a full “over-the-counter monograph order request” asking the Food and Drug Administration to let companies use up to 6 percent bemotrizinol in drugstore sunscreens for adults and children older than six months.[3]

Agency scientists then pulled together lab data, animal tests, human skin studies, and real-use trials to decide whether this chemical deserved the label “generally recognized as safe and effective.”[2][3]

What The Food and Drug Administration Actually Found About Safety And Absorption
