TikTok Sparks Debate Following Push For Sale

(AmericanProsperity.com) – A bill that would require the sale of TikTok has sparked tons of debate among Americans as many are unhappy with what this means for TikTok.

Recently a bill was proposed that would give TikTok 6 months to sell their platform or to shut it down completely. The ban on the social media app has sparked controversy and it also prompted a message for users who opened the TikTok app, which notified them of the situation while giving them the option to call a number to fight against the ban on TikTok.

Congressmen spoke out about receiving dozens of calls from people, including children, regarding the TikTok ban. It’s up for debate if these calls will affect the results of the House vote planned for next week. The TikTok ban was brought forward by 20 lawmakers and passed unanimously by the Energy and Commerce Committee (50-0).

The bill pushed a pledge to “protect the national security of the United States from the threat posed by foreign adversary-controlled applications.” It’s believed by lawmakers that TikTok has ties to the Chinese Communist Party through ByteDance, the company that owns the social media app. Ultimately, the bill forces ByteDance to sell the application, or to face the removal of the app on U.S app stores.

Multiple officials have spoken about the potential threat that TikTok has to the United States because the owner has to report to the Chinese government. TikTok went to X with a response to the proposal. “This legislation will trample the First Amendment rights of 170 million Americans and deprive 5 million small businesses of a platform they rely on to grow and create jobs,” TikTok wrote on X.

They said that it was “an outright ban… no matter how much the authors try to disguise it”. However, the United States claims that it’s not solely a ban on TikTok because they are giving them six months to make a decision.

Many also stated that banning TikTok would strip a social media platform used to generate sales for small businesses, for communication, and other capabilities, which would affect millions of people across the United States.
