Lindsey Graham Praises Ron DeSantis After Grilling Putin

( – Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham praised Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday morning, after calling Russian dictator Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” and a “thug” because of Russian military actions in Ukraine.

On this Twitter account, Graham complimented DeSantis’ comments against the Russian leader by saying that the governor’s description of Putin was “spot on,” and claiming there was no other way to describe someone who uses his military to kidnap children. The Senator was referring to the unlawful deportation and transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia, being one of the reasons why the International Criminal Court issued on March 17 arrest warrants not only for Putin but also for Russia’s Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.

Graham tweeted these comments as a response to the surprisingly tougher stance that the Florida governor showed against Russia during a recent interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, where he claimed that the Russian leader must be “held accountable” for the numerous atrocities that Russia’s military have committed during its invasion against Ukraine. Moreover, DeSantis told Morgan that Russia is “wrong” by invading Ukraine, just as it was wrong when it decided to invade Crimea in 2014 during the Obama administration.

DeSantis’ comments against the Russian regime were unexpected, considering that he recently minimized the importance of the Russian invasion by referring to it as a “territorial dispute.” These comments were widely criticized by different members of the GOP, including Graham, who said that the Florida governor was taking China’s position regarding the Russian invasion.

In addition to Graham, Senate Republican Whip John Tune also criticized DeSantis’ “territorial dispute” remark, pointing out that the vast majority of GOP Senators don’t see the Russian invasion as the Florida governor does. Additionally, he claimed that most GOP Senators believe that the United States is interested in stopping Russia’s aggression against Ukraine for national security matters.
